Eddy Arnold 5/15/1918 ~ 5/08/2008
Eddy Arnold dominated the charts for more than three decades and during his era, he set records in country music that stand unchallenged today. Known as the Tennessee Plowboy, Arnold garnered a world-wide following. Although he had a unique, diverse vocal style, that appealed to a wide audience, he was purely country. Arnold was so successful that he was able to repel the Nashville establishment and do things his way, so to speak.
Eddy Arnold, whose mellow baritone on songs like “Make the World Go Away” made him one of the most successful country singers in history, died Thursday morning, days short of his 90th birthday.
Eddy died at a care facility near Nashville, said Don Cusic, a professor at Belmont University and author of the biography “Eddy Arnold: I’ll Hold You in My Heart.” His wife of 66 years, Sally, had died in March, and in the same month, Arnold fell outside his home, injuring his hip.
Arnold’s vocals on songs like the 1965 “Make the World Go Away,” a top 10 pop hit as well as a No. 1 country hit, made him one of the most successful country singers in history.
Folksy yet sophisticated, he became a pioneer of “The Nashville Sound,” also called “countrypolitan,” a mixture of country and pop styles. His crossover success paved the way for later singers such as Kenny Rogers.
He was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1966. The following year he was the first person to receive the entertainer of the year award from the Country Music Association..
Nicknamed “The Tennessee Plowboy,” Arnold first gained notice with appearances on the Grand Ole Opry in the early 1940s. He debuted on the charts in 1945 with “Each Minute Seems a Million Years,” and began his string of 28 No. 1 country hits with “What Is Life Without Love” in early 1947.
His success helped make Nashville an important recording industry hub, according to Sony BMG Nashville, parent of his longtime label, RCA.
Other hits included “Cattle Call,” “The Last Word in Lonesome Is Me,” “Anytime,” “Bouquet of Roses,” “What’s He Doing in My World?” “I Want to Go With You,” “Somebody Like Me,” “Lonely Again” and “Turn the World Around.”
Most of Arnold’s hits were done in association with famed guitarist Chet Atkins, the producer on most of the recording sessions.
Somewhere between the greed for money and sound judgment, the legends of country music were tossed aside for the outlandish sound they call country music today.

What’s He Doing In My World (1/13/1965)
Writers: Carl Belew, Billy Moore, Eddie Bush
Producer: Chet Atkins
What’s he doing in my world
What’s he doing holding my world
If he’s not more than just a friend
Why were you kissing him
And what’s he doing in my world
What’s he doing in my world
Did you tell him that you’re my girl
If you love is really true
Tell him my world’s made for two
What’s he doing in my world
Oh, don’t let me keep on wondering
Just what you’re gonna do
Wondering if the one I love
Loves somebody new
What’s he doing in my world
We don’t need him in our world
So if it’s true he’s just a friend
Explain those kisses you gave him
And what’s he doing in my world
(What’s he doing in my world

my father loved this song so much. thank you for uploading this.
Thank you flashbell for sharing !
i started lissening to eddy arnold at age 16 and i am now 77
Man, I had no idea that Eddie had died. My mother loved his music and exposed me to the wonders of the wonderful vocals that are possible with ballads. I just wish that modern “country” music wasn’t the pop noise that it is.
I know exactly where you are coming from
I remember waking up in the morning and Dad would be listen to Eddie, Miss my Dad very much.
Thanks for the memories..,
such a great song!
Eddie was and will always be one of the best.
My grandmother used to sing Eddy Arnold songs my whole childhood, and I always get a little choked up when I hear him. He’s one of my favorites.
I like this site and I’m not an “old timer!”
You’ve got that right for sure! Eddy was not only a rare talent but a good and decent man, which comes through in the way he sings and is, I think, the real secret of his success. Not a hint of scandal in more than six decades in the public eye. Not many like him left….
S U P E R!!!
Love this song. Always enjoyed Eddie Arnold.
WTF? whats tour problem dude? This is an old timers site so just because your drunk after another Penn State loss dont take it out here. Seriously
Grew up in the 1960s hearing this stuff on the radio with my family on road trips.
Brings back the best of memories.
He was one of the all-time great voices.
I never even heard of Eddie Arnold until this evening. What a revelation this has been for me, a truely great vocalist. Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks for putting great music here i love it ……
I agree because there is way too much hanky panky, let it all hang out going on today. Slick Willy (Bill Clinton) set a bad example when he said “oral sex isn’t sex.”
all single girls and men should listen to this song……..and married ones as well
bravo flashbell i get sick and tired of half wits vulgar comments this song is bellissimo
My dad, too. I just shared some Eddy Arnold vids with him for Father’s Day. Eddy still chokes me up with that haunting bittersweet voice…wonderful.
enough said and I like to rock! what a voice and a gentleman.
WELL SAID YOU ARE RIGHT 100 %
There will never be another with the caliber and quality of voice and honor that was Eddy Arnold. He will be greatly missed.
One great voice, one great preformer, the world will miss him, thanks Eddy for years of yourself
Eddie Arnold was my inspiration for the songs I have written. God bless him. It’s sad as a successful business man I never used my music as a source of income.
