Are your children bored? Are they walking like zombies, whining endlessly for you to bring them to the mall but you’re too fed up strolling inside the wide stuffy air-conditioned building? Indeed, curing boredom can be a challenge but with a little creativity and knowledge about games this task won’t be impossible to do. In this age of computers, parents should control computer gaming and encourage children to play games that don’t require techno-gadget or, better yet, persuade them to read books as well.
Playing is an essential part of every child’s life. Games that encourage cooperation, socialization, interaction with others, and sportsmanship are great for children to play and have fun with. Furthermore, games that will exert physical effort and team building can promote exercise and cure boredom. Whatever games your children may play inside or outside the house, toys will always be part of their games. So, when buying a toy, keep in mind that it should provide them some educational or constructive thinking when playing with it. And as usual, every game should be appropriate to your children’s age. Safety should also be on top of every parent’s list.
The following are the basic classification of games that can entertain your children in times of boredom:
- Constructive games can motivate your child to think creatively and logically. Constructive games usually require toys like elaborate puzzles, building blocks, or toys that involve building a certain object like a ship or a car. These will really keep your child busy for hours.
- Board games are one of the oldest types of games that have existed through the centuries. A game of chess or Chinese checkers can enhance strategy thinking, while scrabble can increase your vocabulary and improve spelling. Bingo is also a popular game; this can be more exciting if after the game prizes like candies are given to the winners. Older children can most probably handle a little competition but everybody should at least have a prize whether they win or not.
- Puppet plays can entertain children in many ways. Let them weave stories and create their own puppet dialogue, in this way you can bring out the imaginative streaks in them. Moreover, they will be busier if they create or design their own puppets.
- Role playing games are similar to puppet plays except that you will be encouraging them to act and play assigned roles. They can either sing or dance or simply act out something from a favorite movie or book. Who knows, you might be grooming a future award winning actor or director among your brood.
- Games with an educational element is very much preferred by parents. Though some of them can be fun, it can also sometimes bore children and make them feel they’re studying instead of playing. In playing educational games such as trivia games or pretend quiz bees, a little creativity with a bucket of candy liven up any boring game. In selecting educational toys, look for toys that perfectly combine playing and learning.
- Games of sport can promote exercise and sportsmanship. Games like dodge ball, soccer, table tennis, or badminton can be easily accommodated in the front or back yard of the house.
- Playing chefs can also be fun for children. Cooking quick easy meals are advisable if you will be doing this type of activity with your kids for the first time. Usually sugary snacks like cookies, brownies, and sometimes pizzas are a sure hit to kids.
