Modern Kids Beds

We constantly look ways of improving our lives.

This constant need for innovation has driven our civilization into unprecedented heights. Within the span of a few years, we have discovered ways of doing things that we previously only dreamed about. These innovations have gradually found their ways into society. We can find signs of modernization everywhere, even on kids’ beds. The evolution of the kid’s bed has gone far. In order to examine it, we need to go back to the roots of beds.

How indeed, did we get from sleeping on the ground to sleeping on beds?

Here is a brief overview of the history of beds:

*In the Neolithic period of history, people began sleeping on “beds” made of furs, leaves and other common material during those times.

It may be that people living in that era discovered that they can sleep better in these materials than on the ground.

*In ancient Egypt, people discovered the benefits of sleeping on raised pallets. King Tut even had a bed made of gold and ebony.

Wouldn’t you like to sleep in something like that?

Is that concept far from the modern kid’s bed? Maybe. But keep in mind, King Tut was a kid.

*The Ancient Romans used the first luxury beds. They filled their mattresses with feathers or hay, and decorated the beds with gold and other precious metals.

However, most modern kids’ beds need not be so luxurious.

*In the 18th century, cast iron beds with cotton mattresses were introduced to deter bugs.

*in 1865, coil springs were first used in construction of beds.

This design enabled jumps, and so probably became the first true modern kids’ bed.

*the 1950’s saw the arrival of foam mattresses and pillows.

*The waterbed was introduced in the 1960’s and the airbed followed during the 1980’s.

The modern kids’ bed has continually evolved from then. However, the term “modern” also changed.

The word “modern” can mean anything, nowadays. It is no longer a monopoly of technology.

Some modern kids’ beds can be called modern simply because of the ingenuity of the design. Modern kids’ beds often reflect in design the current interest of the users. Be it a sports car, a ball, a superhero, the theme of modern kids’ beds is to have fun while going to sleep.

Other modern kids’ beds though, have sophistication in mind. Those are the types of modern kids’ beds designed by artists. It may be questioned, however, whether the design is for the benefit of the user, or of the beholder.

Safety is also a main concern in modern kids’ beds. Most beds have been designed to eliminate sharp edges or any potential hazard to a child.

The materials used for the construction of a modern kid’s bed are also chosen so as to pose the least potential hazard to a child.

From cast-iron to plastic, the modern kids’ bed has indeed gone far.

The development of technology has also incorporated itself into modern kids’ beds. Some have special sensors that detect a child’s sleep pattern so it can alert parents if there’s anything wrong.

Some modern kids’ beds also use technology to make a child more comfortable. These adjust temperature, firmness, and other aspects to make a child’s sleep more comfortable.

Who would have thought that beds would have gone such a long way from the leaves that Neolithic men used?
