The celebration of Palm Sunday is a significant event to the Christendom for it marks the start of the Holy Week. It depicts the successful entry of Jesus Christ to the Jerusalem while riding on a donkey’s back. Many people greeted him by waving palm branches along the street. They shouted Hosanna and laid down their palm branches and cloaks in His path.
While the adults are busy preparing themselves on hearing mass on Palm Sunday, children have nothing to do. They tend to be bored while listening to the priest’s homily, and prefer playing with their playmates rather than hear a mass. Of course, you do not want to be bothered by the boredom of your children for it will distract you while practicing your faith.
Even during Palm Sunday, there are still activities that are specially designed for children. However, it is encouraged that you lead such activities to help them understand why Palm Sunday is celebrated by waving palm branches. There are other questions that may bother their minds about this significant event, so it is your responsibility to let them understand the essence of Palm Sunday in your lives.
Are you ready for some children activities that you can use during Palm Sunday? Read on the preceding sections and learn the various activities for your children during Palm Sunday. You may also invite other children in your neighborhood to join in these activities.
You may begin the activity by first reading the Holy Scriptures indicating the story of Palm Sunday to the children. Discuss with them the reason why Jesus Christ needs to go to Jerusalem despite of the fact that the Scribes and other elders do not recognize him as a preacher of the faith. It will make them understand why Palm Sunday is celebrated before the Holy Week.
After discussing the Palm Sunday story, you may now proceed to various activities that are related to the event. You may instruct them to have their dough ready and craft the scene where Jesus Christ is entering the Jerusalem. Have your children create figures of Jesus Christ Himself, the donkey, and the people cheering on him. Provide dough that is of different colors.
Another way of re-enacting the Palm Sunday story is through flannel boards. You may create a flannel board by stapling felt paper of a standard size on a sheet of a heavy paper, preferably a poster board. Allow the children to draw and color the Bible characters involved in the Palm Sunday story. They may cut it out and have a stick pasted at the back of each figure cut-outs. After which, they may be able to re-enact the event.
You may also conduct a quiz about the Palm Sunday story on the Holy Scriptures. You may do it individually or make a team that is composed of a certain number of children. Have them answer different questions about the event, and provide some incentives to the winners as well as to other participants.
Palm Sunday is an event to remember, for Jesus Christ fulfilled his mission of dying in the cross to save us from sins. That is the important concept above all the activities that you must provide to your children.
Keep their faith alive through these Palm Sunday activities. Your children will surely learn while having fun!
