Parenting a foreign country can be both a challenge and an exciting experience. One never makes the decision to move to a foreign country lightly. Sometimes the breadwinner in the family is either offered the opportunity or required to make a transfer to a foreign country. In these situations, if there are two parents in the family, much consideration and research can help in making the decision to be parenting and a foreign country.

There are different approaches to parenting in a foreign country. One approach would be to immerse yourself into the new culture found in the foreign country where you find yourself. This would mean that you enroll your children in the local schools, learn the local language it if it is different from your own native language and socializes with people in your new community. This way of parenting in a foreign country is both courageous and enlightening. Another way to go when parenting in a foreign country is to seek out schools and neighborhoods were other foreigners have congregated. This is especially common with Americans. Almost everywhere in the world you can find an American school for your children. But when parenting and a foreign country, enrolling your children in an American school will deny them the experiences of learning about people and customs that differ from their own.

Long before you make your decisions about which approach to choose when parenting in a foreign country, there are many logistics involved in foreign travel. And there is lots of research to be done. Everyone in your family will need passports and other travel documents required by the country you will be moving to. Parenting in a foreign country may involve some health risks to your children and yourselves. So it is important to get all the medical information, advice and preparations to avoid or reduce these risks.

Part of the excitement and anticipation of parenting in a foreign country will be spending many hours with your child or children learning about where in the world it is you were going. This can be done at the library or at home on the Internet. Although not many families choose to be parenting in a foreign country, it is an opportunity available to more of us than we realize. All of the normal challenges of parenting that would occur at home will probably occur in the foreign country and maybe even more challenges will arise. But the overwhelming mind expanding does world view that takes place for most people when they travel abroad will be well worth whatever difficulties are involved in parenting in a foreign country.
