Parenting In Your Senior Years

Many parents begin their families in their twenties and early thirties, but sometimes later in life, you will find yourself parenting in your senior years. This may result from an unplanned pregnancy later in life, or a planned, dearly wanted first child beginning in your middle age and sometimes parenting in your senior years occurs when you find yourself parenting your grandchildren. There are many different circumstances that may have brought you to this unique situation of parenting in your senior years.

Just because you have seen over fifty five birthdays, doesn’t mean you can’t become a parent. It may be your first parenting experience or your tenth, but parenting in your senior years presents some unavoidable issues and considerations. The first thing most people think of when they think about someone parenting in their senior years is how old will the parent be when the child is a certain age. And the older the age you are figuring for the child, the more exaggerated the age of the senior parent becomes. But this is by no means the only interesting aspect to parenting in your senior years.

If you have raised one family and are facing parenting a second one now that you are in your senior years, then you have a wealth of parenting experience to draw from. I will have increased confidence and could have limitless patience. You may be shorter on energy and your tolerance for noise and chaos may have diminished over the years, but you can still enjoy and be successful at parenting in your senior years. Hopefully, your health is good and you are functioning at a level to keep up a home and not have to limit your child’s experiences due to your aging. But if this is a challenge for you, call upon friends and other family members to assist you because parenting in your senior years can have it’s difficulties.

When pregnancy occurs at an advanced age, there are some possible higher risks to mother and baby. And there are some congenital conditions that occur in babies born to older mothers. These days, there are many lab tests that can be done to get early diagnosis of these possible conditions and if painful decisions are to be made, mothers now have the information in many cases to help them with those decisions. This is one of the most common challenges to women who face parenting in their senior years.

But beyond the fact that you may not be around when your child gets to her senior years, that is not a reason to hold yourself back when considering parenting in your senior years.
