School holidays can be a challenge due to the lack of structure. Kids have a lot of pressure with school work and peer pressure so they finally get to relax during a school break.
It is tempting for kids to fall into lots of tv watching as well as playing video games, so let’s look at other ways to use that free time over the break. It can be a hard transition for a kid to return to school if he or she has been in a “lazy mode” for several days in a row:
1) A day trip to a science museum can be a lot of fun and educational at the same time. Cities such as Boston and Fort Lauderdale also have an Imax theater which shows 3-D movies related to science including how coral reefs are formed plus movies of the United States National Parks.
2) A number of towns have recreation centers that hold special day camps or activities during breaks. It is a good idea to also get the school newsletter as sometimes parents themselves offer classes in knitting or a sports camp.
3) Depending on the age of the child or teen, thinking of a project to do a little bit each day can be good. For some kids it can be making a scrapbook, for others it could be creating a video and another interesting activity could be organizing photos that show a theme. Creativity without any grade pressure or deadline is a treat and fun in a group or individual project.
Because today both parents often work, dealing with school vacations can be a challenge. Sometimes talking to 3 other parents and organizing a 1/2 day each can miss from work could be a way that the kids will have successive days of activity with minimal time missed from work for each parent. Additionally, each parent can focus on a hobby or area of expertise that they would like to explore on a 1/2 day off from work and add their interests to the day trip.
